Dove receives £1500 from Melton Lions Swimarathon

MELTON Lions’ annual Swimarathon has now raised more than £74,000 in the 12 years since the event started, writes Michael Cooke.


This year’s event generated £6,000 for good causes thanks to the 145 swimmers who took part – and swam an amazing 3,142 lengths between them!

They were supported by an army of volunteers, parents, teachers, Waterfield swimming pool staff and generous sponsors.

At a presentation night at Melton Council’s Parkside offices cheques for £1,500 were presented to Dove Cottage day hospice, the Mayor’s Appeal for the Romy Children’s Fund and the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.

The winners of the schools competition, on the theme of trees, were Long Field (£100), Scalford (£100) and St Peter’s Wymondham (£50). The remainder will support Lions Club initiatives in the townm.

The Lions Swimarathon prize winners were:- Most lengths – Melton Wednesday; Achievement and Endeavour – Derek Kerr; Youth Award – The Speedy Sharks; Best name – St Mary’s Jolly Jellyfish; Most sponsorship – Pera Puddle Ducks.

Special certificates were presented to Kalam Appleby of Melton Learning Hub, Karen Middleton of the Melton Mowbray Building Society and Bob Wells’ Mencap team.
